San Francisco Educators Pass Resolution to Support Movement to Free Mumia Abu Jamal

Posted on February 2, 2023

Whereas Mumia Abu-Jamal was framed for the killing of a Philadelphia police officer for his relentless, award-winning reporting on racist police violence – a national problem which the murders of Tyre Nichols in Memphis and Keenan Anderson in L.A. once again bring to the fore,

Whereas Mumia is innocent but has served 41 years in prison, 29 on Death Row,

Whereas an Amicus brief from the United Nations Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent states that Mumia’s case exemplifies the systemic racism which has characterized the American judicial system from the inception of slavery to this very moment

Whereas the judge in his case has ordered the Philadelphia D.A.’s office to turn over all its files—up to 200 boxes– to the defense and Mumia’s lawyers expect to find further evidence that he was framed, that police coerced and bribed witnesses, and that extreme racism and judicial bias have permeated all the proceedings against him,

And whereas ILWU #10 will shut down the Ports of Oakland and San Francisco Feb. 16 to demand his immediate release, and teachers in the Bay Area are organizing to teach about his case that day, the middle of Black History Month

Resolved:  UESF demands the immediate release of Mumia Abu-Jamal and his unconditional freedom; we will write a letter to the judge and issue a press release stating our position

Further resolved:  that we urge our members to teach about Mumia’s case and the issues of police violence on Feb. 16.
