UESF Statement: New COVID-19 Guidance from Governor Newsom and CDPH

SAN FRANCISCO— Earlier today Governor Gavin Newsom and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) announced that the state mask mandate for schools will end after March 11. UESF President Cassondra Curiel issued the following statement:

“Since the beginning of the pandemic, UESF, along with the other unions of SFUSD, have worked tirelessly around health and safety standards based on science that meets the needs of our community. We look forward to working with the District and City to find a collaborative path to ease mask requirements based on the needs of San Francisco students, families, staff, and educators.

“With low numbers of community transmission, continued access to quality masks and testing outlined by our health and safety agreement, and vaccinations, boosters, and proper ventilation, we support educators, staff, and students masking up based on what feels safest for them. We remain committed to protecting the most vulnerable and support those who choose to continue wearing a mask once the mandate is lifted locally. We will also remain vigilant and continue to monitor spikes should we need to reimplement mandatory masking.”
