United Educators of San Francisco Responds to SFUSD’s Planned School Closures, Co-locations, and Mergers

SAN FRANCISCO — United Educators of San Francisco (UESF) will hold a press conference on Monday, September 16, at noon to address the upcoming announcement by the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) regarding the closure, co-location, or merger of schools as part of the “Resource Alignment Initiative.”

UESF is advocating for the protection of public school communities and demanding that the district provide clear, supportive, and community-centered plans if closures proceed. UESF will highlight the negative impacts of school closures on marginalized communities and call for measures to support affected students, families, and educators.

“SFUSD’s track record does not inspire confidence,” said UESF President Cassondra Curiel. “School closures, mergers, and co-locations are drastic measures that have never been proven to lead to better outcomes for students. They disproportionately affect Black and Brown communities and are part of a broader trend of divestment from public schools. This process cannot be a repeat of 2006.”
