This page is a resource for substitute teachers in the San Francisco Unified School district. It will be updated periodically, as issues affecting substitutes come up. Important links are also available below.

Email is: econley@uesf.org
Phones: voice: 415/956-8373, ex. 18, fax: 415/956-8374I do check my voice mail and email on a regular basis and attempt to respond in a timely fashion.
PRIORITY SUB STATUS
Information you need to know. I am collecting letters from those substitutes who want to be placed on the Priority Sub list. (Article 28.3.7.1) Once I have a fairly complete list I will pass it on to the Substitute Office of SFUSD so that they can program the call system to your advantage. Please get me your requests in a timely fashion so that I can expedite delivery to 555 Franklin.
NEW CONTRACTS
UESF is not doing a mass distribution of the new contract to all members. The contracts will be delivered to school sites in September. If you need one, check in with the Union Building Representative at the school site where you are working. There will be one available for you to reference.
1ST MEETING WITH SUBSTITUTE DIVISION
The first Substitute Division meeting will be Wednesday, September 24, 4:15 to 5:45. I look forward to seeing many of you there. I have pocket calendars and flat calendars to distribute at that time. I will also have some new contracts available at that time.
PROBLEMS
Please be aware that there are time lines involved in solving problems that arise during the workday. Whether it is with administrators, teachers, students, support staff, payroll, etc. The sooner you inform the union of adverse situations, the sooner we can provide support.
VOTING RIGHTS
Per the UESF Constitution the substitutes are obligated to form a standing committee. That involves nominating and electing a Vice-Chairman and a Secretary. All members of the Division in good standing are eligible to run for and vote in the election.
With regard to the above, you will find enclosed a nominating form for all the available positions. Please fill it out and return to me by September 12, so that I can send out voting ballots by September 17. We will have time for discussion at our first meeting, then I want the ballots back by October 1. I hope to have our officers and committee in place by the October 29 Division meeting.
SUBSTITUTE COMMITTEE
In addition we have a Substitute Committee, (Article 28.3.1). We will establish this group at our Division meetings. This committee is charged with meeting monthly with SFUSD representatives. One of the charges is to develop an evaluation procedure for subs. This group ideally could resolve problems as they occur, thus simplifying everyone's life.
REMINDER
To facilitate our communications, please inform UESF when you have a change of name, email, phone number or snail mail address. All of this may be done on the UESF.org web site, no need to phone the information in.
I am working on having all this information posted to the UESF Web Site - Substitute Division.
That's all folks!

Substitute Assignment Tips
It is worthwhile to check the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) the district says it has installed on its website (SFUSD.edu) to check whether your common sense understanding matches their processes. Did you know that “No Records Found” and “No Work Available” means that the lines are busy? The district says their off-the-shelf program cannot make the change to something like “Busy, try again”. When the above messages are received the phone callers have to hang up and call again. On-line users have to refresh their cache or press the search button.
In addition to district’s training you can access a vendor’s 20-minute walkthrough. Go to www.eschoolssolutions.com/Sadie and then click on Substitutes.
Working Families Tax Credit
Substitute teachers and paraprofessionals are among those who may qualify for the matching funds the City of San Francisco grants to residents who earned less than $39,000 in 2006. To qualify for the City funds you must also file for the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and have at least one dependent child. Applications are available at public libraries, H & R Block offices and other venues. (415-557-6284 or www.ci.sf.ca.us).
Joint Union-District Substitute Committee
The recently appointed members of the UESF Substitute Committee are Jeff Giaquinto, Lauren Moret, Kathleen Murphy, Cathy O’Byrne-Shwechuk and Pam Routh. The committee members selected Pam Routh to be their Chairperson. Their first project was to work with the district on the January 26, 2007 Professional Development Workshop for Substitutes. Other issues of concern include the assignment system and substitute evaluations.
